 Embodiment of Versatility
-           Jyotirmoy Nandy
Mahumudul Hasan Nizami is a truly versatile genious personality of our time. He is a poet, lyricist, qari, physician and successful businessman, politician, journalist, teacher, and researcher in one person.
His parents are Late Maolana Md. Abdullah and late Maimuna Khatun. He was born at Kalapania village in the island of Sandwip under Chittagong district of Bangladesh on February 1, 1971. Later their family migrated to Kaukhali under the hill district of Rangamati when he was just a minor child, and was brought up at the spacious courtyard of Mother Nature there. Presently, he is residing permanently in Dhaka.
The number of his published books is 44. He also launched 20 albums of his poem recitals and songs written and composed by him.
The sphere of Mr. Nizami’s works is broad enough. A combination of so many qualities in one person is truly rare and unbelievable. One cannot just recognise him if he/she does not go close to him. He is so simple and ordinary in his attire and outward look that only the true connoisseurs can evaluate him by digging him closely enough. What one would see with open eyes would see something quite different by entering deep into his realm of personality.
Al Mahmud, one of the major poets of Bangla poems of our time, said about Mr. Nizami, “The uses of his words and similes have made even an age-old poet like me elated.” Some other critics termed him as a poet of ‘nature and love’.
When one listens the hamds and nats written and composed by Mr. Nizami in different media, he/she becomes surprised to notice a complete reflection of Kazi Nazrul Islam there. As for example: “O my haji brother, convey my salam to the mausoleum of Hazrat.” Many popular lines of the Islami songs of Nazrul would be echoed in the minds of the readers or listeners when they would read or listen to these type of lines written by Nizami.

Somewhere else he writes: “The moon smiles in the azure of the sky. / My thirst for love is blended with the grasses green.” Works of the epoch-maker English poets like John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelly comes to our mind when we read such lines hued so romantically.
A poem on Kazi Nazrul Islaam, the National Poet of Bangladesh, written by Mahmudul Hasan Nizami is inscribed in a mural made by the Ministry of Works by the main gate of D. C. Hill Nazrul Square in Chittagong. Mr. Nizami has shown a unique skill to summarise the whole revolutionary life and deeds of the Rebel Poet in this small poem of only eight lines in a truly flawless perfection. The poem is memorised already by hundreds and thousands of people and has become almost immortal.
‘Pakhir Mela Fuler Mela’, a book of Bangla juvenile poems written and illustrated by Mr. Nizami and published by Cooperative Society of Chittagong bears a concrete proof of his great skill as a painter. But he himself kept his identity as a painter hidden untill the book was published.
Besides, he has brought a novelty in the publication of literary works in a social media like the Facebook. When the Facebook is used mainly to post personal matters and pictures, Nizami is continuing to post new poems and lyrics adorned with new concepts and designs in his Facebook timeline, which has added a new dimension in the Facebook world.
Besides his creative works, Mr. Nizami has taken a number of steps to preserve the memories of Kazi Nazrul Islam in different places of Chittagong, where the National Poet travelled in his lifetime. He has played the key role to convert D. C. Square, the main cultural centre of the port city, into Nazrul Square. He also has taken measures to preserve the spots like Patenga Sea Beach, Sitakunda Eco Park etc. where the Rebel Poet visited when he came in Chittagong. These efforts actually bears the strong evidence of his deep love and regards to Poet Nazrul.
In social perspective also, Mr. Nizami is successful person. He took major parts in founding about ten organisations, which reflects his characteristic as a dedicated social activist. He took the first initiatives and took part in all possible way to establish educational institutions like Kaukhali College, Kaukhali Girls’ School, Nailyachhori

High School, and Siddique Akbor Madrasa, and organisations like Kaukhali Press Club, Kaukhali Youth welfare Council etc.
As a locally popular public figure, Mr. Nizami took part as a candidate of the Chairman post in the Upazila Porishad (Sub-district Council) Election of 2008. Though he was defeated by a small margin, the poll is a true example of his high social popularity. 33 thousand votes were cast in his favour. He won the hearts of these much voters by spending Tk. 70 thousand only.
Mr. Nizami’s accomplisments as a hereditary Unani physician also is very much remarkable. Some of the medicines formulated by him is highly effective in relevant cases of diseases, and very much popular among the patients.
Mahmudul Hasan Nizami, the man and the poet, is always vibrating with a vital lifeforce, and delivering it generously in different fields of literature, art, culture, and social services.
One’s face or appearence is not always a indicator of his personality or qualities. Mr. Nizami usuaally keeps himself wrapped in the disguise of a common man. But if someone is able to dig him deeper, he/she will be simply surprised to witness the radiance of his versatility which sorrounds him like an unextinguishable aura.
He writes in one of his poems—“When your memory compels you to remember me / you’ll find me strewn in the stars of the sky.”
Truly, his extraordinary achievements are strewn in the stars, and twinkling before our eyes like invaluable pieces of diamonds. He has come carrying the flag of a new wave in the arena of Bangla poetry and literature. Mahmudul Hasan Nizami is the name of a new epoch and approach in creative art and services to humanity.
